EAT
August is a fabulous month for fresh, local food. There’s still plenty of time for outdoor family BBQs, camping or cottaging weekends, and brunch enjoyed on the back deck or front porch. Here’s a scrumptious August recipe collection curated by The Domestic Dietitan, with a Mediterranean twist. Check out the fresh melon salads accented with salty feta cheese or savoury za’atar.
READ
August is also the start of back to school shopping, including finding nut-free, shelf-stable, kid-approved snacks for lunch and recess. Some snacks that fit this bill also contain artificial sweeteners – where does the research currently stand on the long-term impact of daily non-caloric sweetener consumption? This August 2024 editorial from Frontiers in Nutrition showcases a few new research entries from 2024.
LEARN
Reducing instances of perioperative malnutrition is a crucial area of focus for clinical dietitians. Effective screening for signs of deficiency can look different when working with patients living in larger bodies, and this population is at especial risk for malnutrition. Mark your calendar for an upcoming CNS webinar on September 26, 2024 addressing this often-missed group. This information is also useful for outpatient RDs counselling people using incretins (ie semaglutide/tirzepatide) for glucose control or obesity management, as muscle loss and malnutrition are increasingly-identified risks of long-term incretin use, especially if not actively supervised by an RD to ensure nutritional adequacy during treatment.
